How to measure your windows for curtain fabric

Precise measurements are crucial for a perfect curtain fit. Following these easy steps will help ensure you have the right measurements to buy your curtain fabric, and check that your new custom curtains will complement your windows beautifully!

Step 1: Gather Tools

Gather the necessary tools:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil or pen
  • Paper or notepad to jot down measurements

Step 2: Decide on Curtain Style

Decide on the curtain style:

  • Inside Mount: Curtains installed inside the window frame.
  • Outside Mount: Curtains installed outside the window frame.

Step 3: Measure for Inside Mount

For Inside Mount:

  1. Width:

    • Measure the width inside the window frame at three points: top, middle, and bottom.
    • Record the smallest of the three measurements as the width.
  2. Length:

    • Measure the height inside the window frame from top to bottom in three places: left, middle, and right.
    • Record the longest measurement as the length.

Step 4: Measure for Outside Mount

For Outside Mount:

  1. Width:

    • Measure the width of the window including any extra area where the curtains will hang outside the frame.
    • Add the desired overlap (typically 4-6 inches on each side) to the window width to determine the curtain rod length.
  2. Length:

    • Measure from the desired top point (above the window frame) to where you want the curtains to end (sill length, below sill, or floor length).

Step 5: Consider Curtain Fullness

Consider the fullness of the curtains:

  • For a fuller look, multiply the width measurement by 1.5 to 3 times, depending on the desired amount of fabric gathering.

Step 6: Finalise Measurements

  1. Double Check:

    • Ensure all measurements are accurate and double-check before finalizing.
  2. Record:

    • Write down all measurements clearly, specifying whether they're for inside or outside mount.

Step 7: Additional Considerations

  1. Hanging Hardware:

    • Consider the type of hanging hardware (rod, track, etc.) and factor it into your measurements.
  2. Pattern Matching (If Applicable):

    • If using patterned curtains, consider how the pattern will align and adjust measurements accordingly.

Step 8: Consultation (Optional)

If uncertain or for complex windows:

  • Consult with a professional curtain maker or installer for guidance on measurements or any specific concerns.

Step 9: Final Notes

  • Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.
  • Take note of any obstacles or fixtures around the window that might affect curtain placement.
  • Consider adding a few inches to measurements for flexibility in installation.
